Shockwave Therapy

What is shockwave therapy?

Shockwave therapy, also referred to as extracorporeal pulse activation technology (EPAT®), is an innovative, noninvasive pain management tool that uses acoustic pressure to stimulate your body’s natural healing process to repair diseased or damaged tissue.

The FDA-approved treatment utilizes proprietary technology based on a unique set of pressure waves that stimulates cell activity, enhances blood circulation, and accelerates the healing process. It also stimulates the release of nerve chemicals that act as an immediate analgesic for pain relief.

It’s considered one of the most advanced and highly effective noninvasive treatments for pain management, and it comes without any risks, complications, or lengthy recovery time.

Am I a good candidate for shockwave therapy?

Dr. Sheps determines if you’re a good candidate for shockwave therapy during your evaluation. He uses the innovative treatment for both acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions. Some of the most common uses include:

  • Achilles pain
  • Tendon pain
  • Neuromas
  • Trigger points
  • Heel pain

Dr. Sheps specializes in sports and auto accident injuries and may also recommend shockwave therapy as a tool to accelerate the healing of these types of injuries.

What can I expect during shockwave therapy?

Dr. Sheps performs shockwave therapy at the office. Your treatment only takes about 5-10 minutes and doesn’t require any anesthesia.

During your therapy, Dr. Sheps first applies a special gel to your skin, which improves the effects of the sound energy. Then, he places the shockwave applicator over the treatment area and moves it in a circular motion.

Dr. Sheps may suggest you take it easy for up to 48 hours after your shockwave therapy, followed by modified activities for up to four weeks.

While you may notice an improvement in your pain immediately following your first shockwave therapy session, Dr. Sheps may recommend a minimum of three sessions at weekly intervals to get the most benefit from the procedure. Most patients experience either complete resolution of their pain or a significant reduction after their treatment.
