Michael Sheps, DC

Chiropractor in Brentwood, Los Angeles, CA

Dr. Michael D. Sheps

Dr. Michael D. Sheps is a certified chiropractic orthopedist who focuses on the proper diagnosis and treatment of a broad range of musculoskeletal disorders. In his practice, he specializes in safe, non-invasive alternatives to conventional treatments.

Education

Dr. Sheps received his Bachelor of Arts in Biology with an emphasis on Human Anatomy from Bloomfield College in 1980. He subsequently received a Master of Science from the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science in 1982, a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition from the Life Chiropractic College in 1984, and a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from the Life Chiropractic College in 1986. In 1998, he was certified in the McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy. Throughout his long career, Dr. Sheps has continued to expand his knowledge of chiropractic techniques and of the emerging field of medical technologies, ensuring he is well-equipped to provide his patients with the best possible care.

Clinical Practice

In 1987, Dr. Sheps founded his first clinic, the All-Back and Joint Care Medical Group. Today, Dr. Sheps is the owner of Michael D. Sheps Chiropractor and the founder of Pacific Coast Orthopedic Sports Medicine. Established in 2012, Pacific Coast Orthopedic Sports Medicine is the first multidisciplinary clinic of its kind. Built upon the principles of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and integrated orthopedic care, this renowned practice hosts a team of highly trained internists, orthopedic surgeons, pain management doctors, and chiropractors who leverage their combined expertise to more effectively diagnose and treat patients. The clinic’s collective goal is to address the underlying causes of musculoskeletal pain and injury by stimulating the body’s natural regenerative processes.

Dr. Sheps employs a comprehensive approach to chiropractic manipulation and patient care: he makes chiropractic adjustments only when necessary, educates his patients on self care and rehabilitation techniques, and offers safe treatment alternatives to conventional medicine and surgery that both expedite recovery and enhance quality of life. His alternative treatment methods include laser therapy, spinal decompression, high energy inductive therapy, shockwave therapy, and general chiropractic care.

Clinical Research and Other Professional Accomplishments

Dr. Sheps’ keen interest in alternative treatments and medical technology is additionally illustrated in the research he has conducted in this field. Dr. Sheps partnered with Biolase– a leading global manufacturer in medical lasers– to develop the Epic T-series laser and the Diolase 10 Pain Therapy laser, both of which are used in podiatry, dentistry, and physical medicine. Dr. Sheps is credited with providing the original clinical research that guided the engineering of these lasers.

Additionally, Dr. Sheps partnered with Zimmer MedizinSystems to develop their TECAR and emFieldPro therapy technologies. TECAR therapy delivers deeply penetrating heat that increases circulation and blood vessel dilation, thereby reducing pain and inflammation and expediting recovery. The emFieldPro is a high energy inductive therapy that increases the energy accessible to damaged cells, allowing the targeted cells to optimize function. Dr. Sheps also collaborated with Dr. Allan Dyer– the inventor of the Trans-thoracic Cardiac Defibrillator– to develop protocols for Dyer’s Vertebral Axial Decompression (VAX-D) table. The VAX-D table is a non-surgical medical instrument utilized in spinal decompression therapy. To date, Dr. Sheps has used the VAX-D table to treat over 5,000 patients.

For more than twenty years, Dr. Sheps has trained and certified practitioners in laser therapy and provided clinical education on the topic. From 1998 to 2006, Dr. Sheps served as a non-compensated faculty member at the UCLA School of Medicine, where he taught an elective on complementary and alternative medicine. Dr. Sheps’ laser therapy techniques have been replicated nationwide in leading healthcare facilities, including the University of California Los Angeles, Johns Hopkins University, and The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. His laser therapy techniques were also adopted by Dave Fagan– the Executive Director of the Colyer Institute in San Diego, California– in the treatment of fungus on the toenails and on the tusks of elephants.

Dr. Sheps’ medical career spans more than thirty-six years, in which he has positively impacted numerous lives: he has treated Gold-Medal Olympic athletes, well-known celebrities, and countless others seeking relief. As a former athlete, Dr. Sheps has always understood the importance of recovery for optimal health. He therefore strives to help all of his patients achieve lives that are healthful and free from chronic pain.

Conditions
We Treat
Chiropractic therapies are designed to treat the whole body in a natural and holistic approach that treats the entire lifestyle of the patient. Diet, nutrition, and life practices can determine as much about our health as anything else. By practicing a healthy lifestyle, more expensive and drastic medical techniques like drugs and surgery can often be avoided. We treat a wide range of conditions, including back and neck pain, and spinal pain and injuries. Curvature of the spine, also called scoliosis, can be treated effectively with chiropractic techniques. Chiropractic methods can also treat headaches and pain, including migraine headaches. Soft tissue and muscle injuries can be treated by massage and other traditional therapies.
Our laser therapies can be used by many patients to help them reduce inflammation and to help promote healing.

Our Services

In addition to traditional chiropractic services like spinal decompression and adjustment, we offer laser therapy, custom orthotics, and the McKenzie method to diagnose and treat patients. McKenzie methods enable patients to maintain their health by teaching self-care techniques to prevent back and neck conditions from returning. We also offer injury rehabilitation services to help our patients recover from a variety of injuries and we offer spinal decompression to help our patients overcome herniated discs or other spinal conditions.
